The Church's One Foundation
"For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ." (1 Corinthians 3:11)
"
The Church's One Foundation" is a rich theological hymn rooted in Scripture and written by Samuel John Stone in the 19th Century. It's central message is drawn from our text.
The question that comes to mind, is how the church today has strayed from this significant biblical truth?
Let's look at some ways!
1. Compromising Biblical Authority.
Many churches now treat Scripture as suggestive rather than authoritative.
A 2022 survey found that only 37% of pastors hold a biblical worldview, with many embracing syncretism - a blend of secular and spiritual beliefs.
Some pastors deny core doctrines like the deity of Christ, the reality of sin, and salvation through Jesus alone.
2. Doctrinal Confusion and False Teaching.
The false teaching concerning Jesus' divinity. Was Jesus truly the Son Of God? Or was He just a good teacher during His time? And then the false teaching that salvation is by works, or emotional experience rather than grace through faith.
3. Cultural Conformity.
Instead of transforming culture, many churches are being transformed by it. Some embrace secular ideologies on gender, sexuality, and morality that contradict Scriptures.
If Jesus is the only foundation of the church, why are we as Christians, not standing firmly on the teachings of our Lord?
A movie entitled: "Time Changer" staring D,David Morin and Gavin Macleod, challenges the attitude, that it's alright to leave The teachings of Jesus out of the decisions we make concerning the life we are to live. Who says that it's not alright to steal, to lie, to live immorally? This movie emphatically states, that it is the Lord Jesus Christ who set's the standards for how we are live our lives. Jesus is not only our Savior, but He is Lord! And we are to submit to His Lordship. Someday everyone will bow down to the Lordship of Jesus Christ according to Philippians 2:9-11.
If Jesus is the foundation of the church, then we as the church, need to submit to the care and authority of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for the whole world to see! GP
