"But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak." (1 Corinthians 8:9)
I don't know how you can get away from being in places where they sell and serve alcohol. Many convenient stores, and restaurants sell and serve alcohol, to their customers. As a Christian, I choose not to buy or drink alcohol. I could buy and drink an alcoholic beverage, and it would not have a negative affect on me.
But I agree with the Apostle Paul, that we as Christians need to set a good example for those who struggle with such a challenge.
There were some of the Christians at Corinth that believed the spirits of pagan gods were absorbed into the meat that had been sacrificed to an idol, and that Christians could be possessed by demons if they ate it (Bertolini and Richards, 135).
Even though an idol was nothing to the Apostle Paul, he knew that some felt it was a sin to partake of meat sacrificed to a pagan god. I believe that Paul is encouraging the Christians at Corinth (and us) to be sensitive to the needs of other Christians. What may not bother us, or affect us, could affect others, and cause them to struggle in their Christian faith and practice.
We are to help our weaker brothers and sisters in Christ to grow and mature in their relationship with Jesus Christ, and His will for their lives. It will not just take what we say, but what we do as well.
Let's set a good example, and always think of others over ourselves! GP
