"And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God." (1 Samuel 30:6)
Have you ever felt like you were taking on the challenges of life all by yourself?
David felt that way. When the Amalekites invaded Ziglag, they burned it, took the women and children captive, and left David with the people ready to stone him. To say that David was distressed, would be an understatement.
How do you face a mountain of problems all by yourself? You feel like running away, or sticking your head in the sand. But in our text it says that David did an astonishing thing. It says that he..."encouraged himself in the Lord..." He was never alone. He knew that the Lord was with him. And so he went to the only friend he had at the time, and He petitioned the Lord for direction in what He should do. And the Lord told Him to go ahead and pursue the Amalekites, and in so doing he would recover all that he had lost (v.8)
What David understood, we need to always remember. We are always in God's hands. When it feels like we are struggling against the pressures of life all alone; we are never alone. We need to remember that we have the greatest power in the universe behind us.
As the Apostle Paul said in Romans 8: 31 "What then shall we say to these things?" If God is for us, who can be against us?"
When in affliction’s valley
I’m treading the road of care,
My Savior helps me to carry
My cross when heavy to bear,
Though all around me is darkness,
Earthly joys all flown;
My Savior whispers His promise,
“I never will leave thee alone.”
