Who Has Our Back?
"Be sober, be vigilant, because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour." (1 Peter 5:8)
How can the Christian life, be a happy life, when we have an enemy who is constantly trying to cause us to be out from under the umbrella of the will of God? Temptations are always approaching our weakest points in our lives, and trials are always trying to cause us discouragement and despair.
Peter tells his readers to "be sober, be vigilant." How is this a way to live?
The Psalmist David agrees with Peter about this comforting fact in our lives.
"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me."(Psalm 23:4) "Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting your care upon Him, for He cares for you."(1 Peter 5:8)
They agree that when we submit to the authority and care of our Good Shepherd, we can be happy and confident in our Christian life.
I remember seeing a picture of a lion cub, standing firm, and confident, and when you looked closer, you saw behind him, the image of a lion. He had someone to back him up, when he faced the danger in front of him.
The same is true with us. How in the world can we think that we take on the devil, and face the challenges of this world, without the Lord Jesus Christ? Yes, we need to be watchful, yes, we need to serious, in our Christian walk. But more than this, we can be happy, and as the apostle Paul tells us to "be anxious for nothing" (Philippians 4:6)
The Lord Jesus Christ has us. He is the Good Shepherd who watches over our lives, now and for all eternity. (Read Psalm 121) GP
