"For as often as you eat this bread, and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes."
(1 Corinthians 11:26)
In my home church we observed The Lord's Supper every Lord's Day (Sunday)
I grew up with this weekly observance, and it has always meant a great deal to me, in my Christian life. But how often we as Christians observe, is not as important as the fact that we do observe The Lord's Supper, until He comes again. (Mark 14:25)
The key word in Jesus' words to His disciples (this last night of supper with them) is the word "Remembrance." (Luke 22:19) We come together as the body of Christ to remember the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ. His death paid the penalty for the sins of the world, including yours and mind.
Jesus gave us two emblems to help us remember this significant event.
The Bread: Which Jesus broke, signifies His broken body.(John 19:34a) His bones were not broken, but His side was pierced on the cross at Calvary.
The Cup (of the fruit of the vine - Luke 22:18) signifies Jesus' shed of blood for us on the cross of Calvary. (John 19:34b)
Whether it is with an assembly of Christians together, or a personal, individual observance. It is very important that we never forget what Jesus did to save us, from the penalty and destruction of sin.
And each time, we observe The Lord's Supper, we give testimony to the world around us, of the hope we have in Jesus Christ, fulfilled when He comes again!
Let's always do this: In Remembrance of Him! (GP)
