"I say then" Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh." (Galatians 5:16)
Just recently a question was presented to me: "Why is it, that some churches emphasize the working of the Holy Spirit, and others don't?" That is a good question. The Apostle Paul speaks of the Christian life as being "a walk". And to have success in this "walk", we must walk in the leading of the Holy Spirit. Paul goes on to say in a later verse (v.25) "If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." At baptism we were given the gift of the Holy Spirit.(Acts 2:38) The Greek word "Parakletos" means advocate, comforter, helper, "one who walks along side of" (John 14:16) How grateful we should be, that we have "a helper" to walk along side of us, as we try to walk the Christian walk. To answer the question of why some churches do not emphasize the work of the Holy Spirit like others do, is to say that in some cases, it may be a difference in doctrine, a preoccupation with the social concerns over the spiritual concerns. A lack of preaching and teaching on the subject. The church is like an old cannon that sits in a park on display. It is harmless, just sitting there. Birds can build their nests in its barrel. But when the black powder, and a cannon ball is put in place, all that is needed is a spark, to ignite the powder, and that cannon becomes a weapon again. The sound of the blast is definitely heard. That spark for the church, is the Holy Spirit. Indeed we need to emphasize the Holy Spirit's work in our lives. We need Him, more than we realize! GP
