"...That they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me." (John 17:21)
Have you ever carried a sack full of groceries, and have the sack break, and all the groceries go everywhere. You would hope that when that happens, you are not standing in front of a whole group of people witnessing your mishap. Keeping things together is not always easy. It is the Lord Jesus' prayer that all that belong to Him, have a unity that is strong and lasting. Just as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have a unity that is solid, so is it to be with us, as fellow Christians. I believe for the local church, to have unity, there must be humility. I have brought this out so many times in my sermons, that people are probably tired of hearing about it. When we constantly have an inward focus, this only leads to selfishness. But when we have a constant outward focus, than this leads to unity and stability, in the family of God. You can tell in the words of our Lord, in His prayer. He wants those who belong to Him, to have what He has, with the Father. He wants this unity to be seen, so that people in the world will believe, and come to Him to experience this blessed fellowship. The world needs to see that God sent a Savior. And that coming to Jesus, we can be saved from sin, and from our selfishness. We can live in peace, and enjoy the wonderful fellowship with the Father, and the Son, and with each other. There is nothing that is more fulfilling, than to be together with our Lord, and to feel the Love, that is so true and abundant. GP
