A Past Pursuit VS A Future Gain

"...but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind.." (Philippians 3:13b) I have heard these words before: "The past is a place you can visit from time to time, but you don't want to live there." When the Apostle Paul became a Christian, he realized that what he had gained was more valuable than what he had left behind. He had gained a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ over, a strong heritage, an education, a position and career. But none of these things could satisfy, or bring fulfillment in His life, like his relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. "Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ." (Philippians 3:8)
As we look in the rear view mirror of our lives, can we say that our lives were fulfilled by the many pursuits of the world? Yes, there were good times, and bad times, as there will be in the future, but was there a huge piece of the puzzle missing? To Paul it was Jesus Christ. He tried to be righteous, by the keeping of the law, but that was a path to disappointment. As Christians, when we give the Lord Jesus Christ a chance in our lives, we will find a right relationship with the Lord, that will bring peace. We will find in this relationship, a purpose that outweighs anything the world has to offer.
We need to press on (Philippians 3:14) and find that fulfillment, that only a relationship with Jesus Christ can provide! GP

To God We Are Special

There are so many people in our churches today, who have given their hearts to Jesus Christ, yet they maintain a feeling of worthlessness. Some have felt this way since childhood, others because of negative circumstances and negative comments along the way, have let society convince them, that they are not worth very much. How are we special to God? There are three things that God did that shows us that we are special to Him. 1. He Has Chosen Us. (Read Ephesians 1:3-4) From the very foundation of this world, God chose us to be a part of His kingdom, a part of His family.
It is a wonderful feeling to know that you were chosen. it makes you feel wanted, and needed. Through Jesus Christ, God's Son, God made a way for us to be with Him for eternity. 2 He Has Changed Us. (Read 2 Corinthians 5:16-17) After sin took its toll on us, we needed restoration. That's exactly what God did though Jesus. We became new creations. That which was old and destructive is gone, and the new has come. How great it is to put on that which is new. You feel special when some one provides this for you. 3. He Has Challenged Us. (Read Matthew 5:13) Not only has God given us a place, and a purity, but He has given us a purpose. We are to be like salt. We are to flavor this world with the elements of a Christian lifestyle. We are to preserve the truth of God's Word by, not just in what we say, but in how we live. What a privilege to be called to help the Lord with the work of reaching a lost and dying world. If you want to feel special, Don't look to the world, but look to the Lord. He loves us more than we could ever imagine. (GP)

Respect & Responsibility

"For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation to everyone who believes, for the Jew first, and also for the Gentile." (Romans 1:16) Lately we have been hearing words of criticism concerning faith and religion from the political arena. America is made up of several religions.     As people have immigrated to this country, they brought their religious beliefs with them. This has been welcomed. As an American citizen, you have the right to worship, and practice your faith here, alongside the diversity of other religions and faith groups.
The question came up this week, whether a Muslim could become president? The Constitution allows it:*"Article VI, paragraph 3 of the Constitution states: "The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States." (*About News) But what must be remembered is that many of the early Americans practiced the Christian faith, and saw their goal as propagating the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The various charter documents of the American Colonies attest to this. I believe that we should be true to what the Constitution allows, and be respectful. But I also believe that we need to be responsible to the continued task, of preaching the Gospel, so people of all color, race, nationality, and religious persuasion, can have an opportunity to hear the Gospel, and accept Jesus Christ as Savior, and Lord of their lives. To have a Christian nation, we must be true to the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) GP

The Christian And Social Media

"Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear." (Ephesians 4:29) Social media has truly had a great affect on our lives. We are able to keep in touch with family and friends more than ever before. But with all the means of communication, it can be used for good, or it can be used for evil. On social media, I have seen and read some very worldly information. I have read comments that were filled with foul language.   I have read the words of family members communicated to each other, that was mean-spirited and down-right hateful.
I have read of young people who have committed suicide because they were severely bullied on social media. For us as Christians, we must set the example in what the Apostle Paul admonished us to do in our text. The words that we use, are not to be corrupt, or severely critical, but are to be for building up, whatever the situation may be. As we walk in the grace of God, may our words be saturated in this grace. May the love of God be expressed in every word we use. May it be the desire of every Christian to lift someone up on social media. To build them up, instead of tearing them down. We have a great opportunity, let's take advantage of it, for our Lord Jesus Christ! GP (Photo) ID 49932006 © Antonio Guillem | Dreamstime.com

That Which I See

“The lamp of the body is the eye.
If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!" (Matthew 6:22-23)
What is very disturbing now is, not only do we hear of people being shot and killed, we can see videos of it on television.*I watched a video just this morning of a confrontation between police and a man who had his hand in the air, and then you hear the shots, and down he goes to his death. I realize that this video may be of use in the investigation, but why does it have to be available for the public to view? This is not a good answer, but with our modern technology, that is where we are at today. We have more information being shown to us today, than any time in history. We see and hear of events happening sooner than ever before. It doesn't matter what form of technology is used to inform the public; what does matter is how it affects the public. What messages are we sending, especially to our young people? But it comes back to where we are as a nation, in regard to our relationship with God. God is not pleased when all we want to do is shock people. With many of us, the violence we are seeing on television (in the news, as well as commercial programing) stays with us, and forms a memory that affects our emotions, our attitudes, and our actions. But the choice is ours to view the things that are pleasing to God. And the things that come across our path that are negative and disturbing, we must place in God's hands, and pray that He will help us to find peace in the midst of such horrific scenes. The Privilege Of Prayer

*There is controversy over a prayer board that was placed inside an eighth grade Mississippi classroom at Oak Grove Middle School in Hattesburg, Mississippi. Lamar County School District officials will soon issue a decision regarding the prayer request display, which was on a classroom's closet door at Oak Grove Middle School. They may have taken prayer out of school, but can they take prayer out of the students? I remember when I attended a one room school, in our community; before we began our school activities, we said our "Pledge Of Allegiance" to the American Flag, and right before lunch, we had a prayer of thanks, for our food. These two exercises reinforced the values that I hold dear today. But today, we are far from the values of our forefathers, who established this great nation. Before we did not look at prayer, and the Bible, as a threat to our rights as American citizens. We embraced them, because we knew that they would help us have, a stability in our relationships, in this nation. Our unity would help us to stand together against anything that threatened the welfare of this wonderful country. But I believe that the absence of prayer, and the study of God's Word, will gradually be to our demise. I don't believe that these two activities should be forced, but desired. When they are, powerful & positive things, will happen! GP

Is It God's Plan?

Yesterday, Kim Davis, the Clerk from Kentucky who refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses, was released from jail. She was held in contempt, for refusing to do this. U.S District Judge David Bunning ordered Davis to be released from jail, five days following, because he was satisfied that the deputies under her post, would fulfill their obligations and issue marriage licenses to legally eligible couples. It makes me question where our nation is going?
I know as I write this article, that there will be many who will disagree with me. I am not writing this article with an attitude of disrespect, but of concern. From the Bible we find that God instituted the marriage relationship to be between a man and a woman. (Genesis 2:24) If two men, or two women were meant to be involved in this institution, how would the earth have been populated? How would a family of a father, and a mother, and children, have been established? How would you, or I, or anyone, have come to be? The marriage between a man and woman is the creator's plan. The most beautiful site you will ever see, is a Biblical family spending time together. It is right, it is pure, it is in the righteous will of God.
Do I hate those who advocate the homo-sexual life-style? No I don't. They are wrong, because homosexuality is sin (Romans 1:18-32) But I love them as God loves them, and hopes that they will repent, and turn to Him, and submit their lives to His will. Waiting

"I waited patiently for the Lord; And He inclined to me, and heard my cry." (Psalm 40:1) Are you a patient person? This is one area I have trouble with. I am not good at waiting. If there is a problem I am dealing with, I want an answer right now. If I am going through a trial, I want to get to the other side of it, right now. In this verse, David does not say that God responded to him right away. He said, "I waited patiently for the Lord." What do we do while we wait for the Lord to hear our petition, and deliver us? Do we go out of our minds? Do we panic, and go ahead and do foolish things, that we will regret later? No, we stay focused on the Lord, and we spend this time, being involved in things that are productive. Like being in the Word of God, and searching for those truths that will encourage us, and sustain us through this painful wait. We look for opportunities to help others who are hurting also. We are not alone in our plight, there are others who are suffering as well. The Lord will show up in His time, and in His way. There are two things we need to remember each time we are called to wait for the Lord. First: In His time He will answer. Second: You can bank on the fact, that when the answer does come, it will be the best answer for our lives. GP

God Cares

"He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust." (Psalm 91:1-2) I have made this comparison from the pulpit that Psalm 91:1 is our spiritual 911 number. We call this number when we want to report an emergency. This Scripture reminds us that there is a secret place where we can go and place ourselves under the spiritual care of the Lord. He is our refuge, and fortress, and in Him we can trust, because God is faithful. I am very thankful for the police, the fire departments, the medical people who are available to care for us when we get into trouble, or become ill. They are highly trained to deal with any need that comes their way. Even though, it costs a lot for their services, what would we do without them? I believe that God has provided them, and the modern technology to provide the treatments and care that are necessary. The truth is, that God cares for us, through these people. I know that in different parts of the world, these people and services are not available. But God works through people that are there, and through them does the best He can. We can depend upon God. We can place ourselves under the wings of His care. That time alone with Him is a secret place to the world. It is a place of peace, and spiritual refreshment. We can go there to get our spiritual batteries recharged. Let's always remember that, when the world lets us down, God never will. He cares deeply for us! GP

Our Place In This World

"The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps." (Proverbs 16:9)
There was a time when I was not a fan of Christian contemporary music. When it came to Christian music, I was a strict traditionalist. I still am today.
I like the old hymns, and old Gospel songs. My son has been a fan of Michael W. Smith for years.     When he would play his music, I would hear the messages of the songs. The one song that was very popular, that got people thinking about their lives was "Place In This World" In the 40 years of pastoral ministry, I have seen people who didn't do much with their lives, and others, who really made an impact for the Lord, in the things they accomplished. Many are asking this question: "Where is my place in this world?" What am I supposed to be doing? Why am I here on this planet? There are two things to look at in establishing our purpose in this world. First, we need to look at what our place is with the Lord. Have we placed ourselves in the Savior? Have we repented of our sins, and been baptized for the cleansing of those sins (Acts 2:38) to establish our place with Jesus Christ forever? Second, we need to look at our place in the Lord's Kingdom. We are to join with fellow Christians in being "kingdom builders". We place ourselves as salt, and light (Matthew 5:13-16) in this world for Jesus Christ. To be used by Him, to bring people who are lost, to Him. By keeping an open heart to the Lord, and an open mind to the opportunities that will come our way; we will find our place in this world, and find great fulfillment in all that we do! GP

The Lesson Aim For Your Life

"And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." (John 8:32)    In the courses of Christian education, we are taught that in developing Bible lessons, we must establish and present the "Lesson Aim". That theme of Bible truth, that is at the core of the lesson. In any passage of Scripture, or in any topical Bible study, what is the main point, we want our students to get? It is the theme from which we establish our sub-points, and any illustrations or analogies to highlight the main point of the lesson. If I were to ask you what the "Lesson Aim" for your life would be, what would you say? Of all the truths from the Bible that you needed to learn, which one would be the main one for your life?  I will tell you mine, and let's see if you can relate to it. From Isaiah 43:1 "But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine." The main lesson that I needed to learn, was: I belong to Jesus. I am His, and I am to love Him, obey Him, and serve Him. I have had many things to learn in my life's journey, but this lesson has affected the decisions of my life. Again, I ask, what is the "Lesson Aim" for your life? GP

Even In Church

"If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of this world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you." (John 15:18-19)
As Christians, I believe we are surprised to see the world in the church. When it comes down to disagreeing about the purpose of the church, and competing for power and place, and severe criticism of one another, in the church; we see the attitudes of the world creeping in. We have this idea that within the Christian fellowship, Satan by no means will enter, and make his presence known. Jesus told Peter that Satan had asked Him, if he could "sift him like wheat." (Luke 22:31) If Satan was there among Jesus and the disciples, he is among us in our Christian fellowship today, wanting to sift us like wheat. The church (which is the people) is a battle ground for Satan to get control, and to destroy. If you think this battle is only out there is the world, you are mistaken. We are never to run away from the battle, but like David, we are to pick up our stones of truth (from God's Word), and face our giants head on. We will not be popular, we may be standing by ourselves. But we will be standing with Jesus, and fighting this battle with Him, yes, even in church! Is This What Jesus Had In Mind?

"Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me." (Matthew 25:40) We need to talk about the church losing its grip on its purpose. We cannot be like a firehouse where they are just polishing the truck, we need to be putting out fires. No matter what it takes to get the work of ministry done, we need to to do it. If it takes money, time, talent, we need to give it all we have. What is disturbing to me is, to hear of churches closing because the members could not get along, and could not unite together to accomplish God's purpose for them. We should all be of the same mind, and that is the mind of Christ. In Matthew 25:33-40 we see how Jesus felt about ministry. When we look at His life, and teaching, we see how important it was. "Now Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the Kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of diseases among the people." (Mathew 4:23) This along with going to the cross for the world is what Jesus was about. As Christians, is this what we are about? The whole theme of Jesus life here on earth was "Ministry" If we as a church lose site of that, then what have we become? I would say, nothing more than a social club, existing just for ourselves. I don't think that is what the Lord Jesus had in mind! GP Inspired by my mother.

Are You Reliable?

"He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much, and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much." (Luke 16:10) Are you someone who keeps their word? Are you someone people can count on? When you're asked to do something, or expected to do something, do you follow through? These are good questions that examine our true character as Christians. There are two attitudes that hinder our sense of responsibility. First there is Pride. To say that "I am going to do what I want to do first, no matter what expectations are placed upon me." "If they don't like it, that's fine." The second is Procrastination. To say, "When I get around to it, it will get done." But we never get around to it, and we let the Lord, and people down. We were always very appreciative of those people who helped us in the ministry. They kept their word, and were right there, when we needed them. That means so much, when you are going through a rough time, and you depend upon others to get you through it. To be responsible and dependable are two character traits that mark a true Christian. In this world, where people are hurting so much, and need the touch of Jesus Christ in their lives, will we be the ones they can count on? I pray that we will be! GP

To Have What We Have

"And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance, for you serve the Lord Christ." (Colossians 3:23-24)
It is true we cannot earn our salvation, and obtain the inheritance that God has for us, by our own means, when this life is done.
We receive it when we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. It is not a work that we do, but a gift that is brought to us by our Redeemer.(Hebrews 9:15) But in light of the fact that we have this reward, for our obedience to the Father, we do what we are called to do for the Lord, heartily. When we become apart of the Kingdom of God, we should greatly desire to further the Kingdom. To be used by God to bring people to the Lord Jesus Christ, so they can have the hope of an eternal inheritance as well. And the focus is not on ourselves, or to have an audiance to applaud all that we do. But all that we do, is to "serve the Lord Christ". It is vital that we know who we are in Christ, and what we have in Him. To realize how rich we are with the blessings He has bestowed upon us, now and forever. And may that be the dynamic force behind all that we do in Christian service. What can we do to make a difference in people's lives for the Lord? To help them have what we have. To help them to realize that there is nothing better than this!? Photo by stockimages. Published on 14 October 2013Stock photo - Image ID: 100209540

The Brashness Of Boasting

"But he who glories, let him glory in the Lord. For not he who commends himself is approved, but whom the Lord commends." (2 Corinthians 10:17-18) The Apostle Paul did not want to do, what a lot of spiritual leaders do today; and boast about their accomplishments, and walk around with an arrogant attitude. It is never to be about us, but most of the time it is. The Apostle Paul was of the attitude, that if there was anything to boast about, it was of Christ Jesus, and Him working in us, and through us. We should never be like the woodpecker that was pecking at a tree, and then flew away. But right after he flew a short distance, lightning struck that tree and split it right in half. The woodpecker looked back and said to himself "Wow, look what I did!" Humility was such a strong characteristic of our Lord Jesus Christ. From His birth to His resurrection, He demonstrated humility. He treated everyone as important. Even the religious leaders (who gave Him a rough time) He wept over, as He wept over Jerusalem. (Luke 19:41) If you are a spiritual leader, strive to have a correct perspective of yourself. No one is more important than anyone else. We all stand in the grace of God. It is a privilege to live and serve the Lord. It is a wonderful feeling to be able to minister to others, and to help them to grow, and progress, in their walk with the Lord. Let's look forward to what the Lord can accomplish through us! GP

Why Study The Bible?

"All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16-17) It would help to know what the church's main objective is with Bible Study. What does God want us to accomplish in our study of the Bible together? According to the Apostle Paul's words to Timothy, the study of the Bible was two-fold. First to understand what God's expectation of what a person's life is to be. God's Word is profitable in helping us to be taught the will of God, to be admonished for sinful attitudes and actions, to be corrected for wrong actions performed. God's Word will help us to walk in righteousness before Him. And secondly that we be trained to do good works. God's Word will help us, as we get involved in Christian service. So many Christians do not take advantage of the privilege and opportunity to study the Bible with fellow Christians. They don't feel that it is all that important. It is vital that we feed on the spiritual food that God designed for our souls, and for success in the Christian walk. It is even more profitable when we can study together, and encourage each other with the Word of God. The Bible is for our well being, let's take advantage of it! GP Photo by David Castillo Dominici. You Are Important

"And the eye cannot say to the hand,
"I have no need of you"; nor again the head to the feet,"I have no need of you." (1 Corinthians 12:21) If you get something in your eye, what part of the body responds immediately? The hand is right there to the rescue. It is an immediate response. I have seen it so many times in church fellowship, that some members are excluded, and made to feel like they are not important. If you are not of a certain social status, you are made to feel like you don't measure up, and are not worth very much. At times people can, and do, make you feel very small. To see the big picture as God does, we need to look at the whole body, and the many parts, each one performing their abilities. The support of each one in the body, helps the body to be healthy and productive. That person who you have not talked to much in your time of fellowship and service, has something to give to you, to contribute to your spiritual health and well being, and you have something for them. I like what Luke said about the members of the early church: "Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common" (Acts 2:44)
It was not just their possessions they shared, but they shared themselves. And what a difference it made! GP

The Spark From Heaven

"I say then" Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh." (Galatians 5:16) Just recently a question was presented to me: "Why is it, that some churches emphasize the working of the Holy Spirit, and others don't?" That is a good question. The Apostle Paul speaks of the Christian life as being "a walk". And to have success in this "walk", we must walk in the leading of the Holy Spirit. Paul goes on to say in a later verse (v.25) "If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." At baptism we were given the gift of the Holy Spirit.(Acts 2:38) The Greek word "Parakletos" means advocate, comforter, helper, "one who walks along side of" (John 14:16) How grateful we should be, that we have "a helper" to walk along side of us, as we try to walk the Christian walk. To answer the question of why some churches do not emphasize the work of the Holy Spirit like others do, is to say that in some cases, it may be a difference in doctrine, a preoccupation with the social concerns over the spiritual concerns. A lack of preaching and teaching on the subject. The church is like an old cannon that sits in a park on display. It is harmless, just sitting there. Birds can build their nests in its barrel. But when the black powder, and a cannon ball is put in place, all that is needed is a spark, to ignite the powder, and that cannon becomes a weapon again. The sound of the blast is definitely heard. That spark for the church, is the Holy Spirit. Indeed we need to emphasize the Holy Spirit's work in our lives. We need Him, more than we realize! GP

How To Be A Shepherd

"Tend My Sheep," (John 21:16) For a long time, I have been captured by the work and responsibility of a Shepherd. Growing up on a farm, and having the responsibilty of taking care of animals, I learned what is involved in this task. We talk about our spiritual leaders in the church, as being shepherds, who look after the flock, ministering to the spiritual needs of the sheep in God's fold. But the question comes: Can we as members of the church, be shepherds to each other? Are we supposed to look at our mutual care for each other in this way? I believe that these words Jesus said to Peter, He says to us today. You don't have to be in specialized spiritual leadership, to be a shepherd to others. You can help feed the Word of God to those who need it. You can be there to help when a crisis arises. There are those times when a pastor, or elders in a church, are not aware of a specific need. Or they are not as close to a certain person or situation as you are, and cannot give the encouragement and enlightment from God's Word, like you can. To be a shepherd to others, is to first of all know the Good Shepherd Jesus Christ intimately. And from that strong relationship with Him, you can love and care for those who have spiritual and physical needs. It may be, that in the process of time, you will be called to be a specialized spiritual leader. When that time comes, you will have had the experience of being a shepherd, to those who need the touch of our Great Shepherd, Jesus Christ! GP
